Volucrine pushes the boundaries of modern metal with "Kapitel V: Förnyelse"

With the release of its fifth studio album, Kapitel V: Förnyelse, Volucrine cements its position at the forefront of the modern metal scene. Released by Inverse Records, the album marks a significant step forward for the Finnish band, showcasing a curious and uncompromising approach to both songwriting and sonic storytelling. The group, long distinguished by its personal and emotionally driven expression, takes a particularly meaningful step with Kapitel V: Förnyelse, not just in scope but also in artistic openness.

Volucrine was founded almost two decades ago by vocalist Jupe Velin—originally as a therapeutic project. Over the years, the band has matured and avoided confining itself to a single genre. Jupe Velin and band members Joni Kyynäräinen (bass), Jani Aalto (drums), Marko Orava (guitar), and Erik Lindroos (guitar) prioritize emotional authenticity over genre boundaries. This basic approach is taken to new levels on the current album, which has grown out of deeply personal experiences during 2024. The lyrics openly address crisis, resilience, and the process of creating a new beginning after loss.

Raw honesty and genre exploration

Velin sees Kapitel V: Förnyelse as the most honest and purest expression of Volucrine's musical vision to date. The working process around the album was both faster and more instinctive than before, which enhances the album's immediacy and honesty. The band consciously chose to disregard the genre's usual frameworks, resulting in an album that moves between metal's various forms while still resting on emotional credibility.

Musically, the album weaves together intricate instrumental layers and powerful vocals. Metalcore elements, which are new additions to Volucrine's repertoire, are especially noticeable on the title track Förnyelse. Technical guitar riffs and intense, at times almost ghostly, screams form the foundation and echo the thematic core of the album: the struggle between despair and the hope for wholeness. The internal pressure cooker that permeates Förnyelse sets the tone for the album's atmosphere and is also present on the eerie cover, where the introspective music is visually represented.

Although Volucrine's sound is often heavy, it is never about heaviness for its own sake. Constant stylistic shifts and genre merges are used as tools to convey emotional stories. The band moves effortlessly between gloomy, downbeat passages and moments of melodic clarity—every choice serving the purpose of expressing vulnerability, determination, or an emotional release.

The album comprises thirteen tracks, with examples such as "Gränsfall", "Golem", "Tung", "Svanar", and the poignant "Framtiden som aldrig blev" standing out. Several singles paved the way for the album's release: First came "Golem" in February along with a music video, then "Prata", the hymn-like "Volukrin", and the intense "Gränsfall". Each single highlights different aspects of the band's expression and the album's central themes.
